Spring Semester Soft Opening

After careful consideration, UH will implement a soft opening of classes, similar to the fall 2021 semester, for the first two weeks of the spring semester (Jan. 18-30).  Campus and offices, particularly student facing services, will remain open.  Residence halls are open and new residents will move in as planned. Classes will start on schedule, albeit in a mixed modality.

Provost Short provided details in this Jan. 10 update to students and this update for faculty instructors.

January 2022 Updated CDC Guidelines

Exposure

The CDC changed its recommendations for potential exposure to COVID-19.  Please see the latest recommendation on the UH Potential Exposure to Coronavirus page.

Isolation/Quarantine

The CDC has issued new guidance for self-solation/quarantine. CDC recommends that you isolate for 5 days following a positive test result or experiencing COVID symptoms. The guidelines for ending insolation have also been updated and include the following scenarios:

• Ending isolation for people who had COVID-19 and had symptoms
• Ending isolation for people who tested positive for COVID-19 but had no symptoms
• Ending quarantine for people that were exposed to someone with COVID-19

Please refer to the UH Completion of Self-Quarantine/Isolation page to review the new CDC guidelines on isolation and quarantine.

Travel Guidelines

The CDC changed its recommendations for Return from International Travel.  Please see the latest recommendation on the UH Travel Guidelines page, updated Jan. 19, 2022.

Omicron Variant

The University of Houston continues to monitor the impact the Omicron variant. Temporary Remote Work/Sick Leave Guidelines for faculty and staff continue to be in place, details can be found here. In addition, guidelines for faculty are available at the Provost’s website here.

Vaccination remains the leading prevention strategy to protect yourself, including a booster immunization for all individuals 18 and older.  The University of Houston strongly encourages everyone - vaccinated or not - to wear face coverings in public indoor settings.

Reporting Requirements

Transparency of data and information about infection is critical in combating COVID-19 spread. The University has Reporting Requirements should you receive a COVID-19 diagnosis, positive test result, are exposed to someone with COVID-19, or those who are not fully vaccinated and return from international travel.
